Hair loss is common and, for many people, upsetting. The good news: a couple of treatments genuinely work, especially when started early.
What works
- Finasteride (a prescription pill, or sometimes a topical) slows loss and can regrow some hair in male-pattern hair loss.
- Minoxidil (a topical or, increasingly, a low-dose pill prescribed by a doctor) helps both men and women.
- Both work only while you use them.
What to ask about side effects
Finasteride can cause sexual side effects in a minority of people, and it must not be handled by anyone who is or could become pregnant. Minoxidil can irritate the scalp and cause temporary shedding at first. A doctor can talk you through your own risks.
What doesn't work
Most shampoos, supplements and "growth serums" have little evidence. Biotin helps only if you're deficient, which is rare.
Where to go
A dermatologist or a licensed telehealth provider. Generic finasteride can be inexpensive from a regular pharmacy with a prescription.
