Getting tested is maintenance, like the dentist. Here's the routine.
How often
Once a year at minimum if you're sexually active. Every three months is common if you have multiple partners or use PrEP (it's built into PrEP care).
Which tests
Usually HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. Ask for swabs from every site you have sex with (throat and rectum, not just urine); otherwise infections can be missed.
Where
Public sexual health clinics (often free), your doctor, LGBTQ+ health centers, or home kits from a certified lab. Our city guides list LGBTQ+ friendly clinics.
If it's positive
Most STIs are treatable, and the clinic will help you tell partners if needed. It happens to a lot of people; it says nothing about you.
