Your first time at a gym.
A gym is the one place where nobody tells you what to do, which is either freeing or terrifying. Most of the room is wearing headphones and thinking about its own next set. A first visit is mostly finding the water fountain, working out how one machine adjusts, and leaving knowing where things are.
Getting in the door
Try it once free. Crunch gives first-timers a free 1-day pass, booked online; the pass arrives by email and includes a complimentary CrunchONE Kickoff session with a coach or trainer. LA Fitness on Eastchester Road offers a free pass on its club page, and notes that offers may not be available at every location. On October 14, 2026, Planet Fitness's club pages linked to a free day pass; its site blocks our checks, so confirm it there.
Buy a day pass. Brooklyn Athletic Club in Williamsburg sells day passes for $35, and Elite Barbell in Sunset Park for $30. A PureGym day pass lasts until midnight on the day you use it, with no contract or sign-up fees, though its price isn't on the pages we could read. YMCA branches sell day passes at the desk, at a price each branch sets.
Join. Memberships are monthly, and the fine print matters more than the headline price. PureGym adds a joining fee of $19.99 to $39.99, and its lowest monthly prices come with a 12-month commitment. Brooklyn Athletic Club says its memberships are month-to-month with no joining, cancellation or annual fees, and the YMCA lists a $0 joiner's fee. More on reading the small print: how paying to move works.
The public route
NYC Parks recreation centers are city gyms with weight rooms, indoor tracks and classes, by membership. For adults 25 to 61 it's $50 for six months at any center without an indoor pool, or $75 for all centers; it's free for ages 18 to 24, and $25 a year for seniors 62 and over, people with disabilities and veterans. You join in person: take the registration form, your payment and a government-issued ID to any center.
Or skip the building. Outdoor fitness equipment in parks across all five boroughs is free whenever the park is open, for pull-ups, dips and crunches. NYC Parks' own advice is to visit often and add repetitions gradually.
What the desk asks for
Bring a photo ID. On October 14, Planet Fitness's pages asked you to bring ID, a towel and a lock. Recreation centers ask for a government-issued ID when you join, and the YMCA takes your photo for the membership card you scan to get in. At PureGym the gyms are open 24/7 but staffed for fewer hours, so go while someone is at the desk the first time.
Gym-floor manners
Wipe down what you used, put weights back where they came from, and don't sit on a machine scrolling while someone waits. If someone is mid-set on the thing you want, ask if you can work in between their sets; most people say yes. If you'd like someone to show you around, Crunch's free pass comes with that Kickoff session, and Elite Barbell's 30-minute group classes are for all levels with no experience needed (arrive 10 minutes early, with water and athletic shoes). The YMCA allows photos and video only with permission from the branch's executive director, which is a decent rule for any gym.

Is this for me?
If you want to train on your own schedule, yes: Crunch Union Square and LA Fitness on Eastchester Road open at 5am on weekdays, and PureGym's gyms are open 24/7. If a room of strangers lifting things sounds like a lot, a coached class or a free pass with a Kickoff session gives you someone to ask. If cost is the worry, start with the outdoor equipment, which is free, or a recreation center.
