Strong evidence

What the evidence says

Exercise-based physiotherapy has strong support for many musculoskeletal injuries and for returning to sport. Passive treatments alone (massage, ultrasound) do less than the exercises you take home.

Good for
Injuries, pain that keeps coming back, returning to training after time off.
Not for
Emergencies, or pain with fever, numbness or weakness: see a doctor first.
Risks
Generally low; some soreness as you load things again.
Insurance
Often covered by insurance, sometimes without a referral. Ask about your plan's visit limits.
Typical cost
$100–$200 a sessionAn estimate of typical prices in our cities, still being checked. Ask for the full price before you book.

Questions to ask

  1. What's your plan, and how many sessions do you expect?
  2. What should I do at home between sessions?
  3. When can I train again, and what should I avoid until then?
